Sébastien is a Fellow at the Hertie School. From 2020 to 2024 he was Professor of Organization & Governance at the Hertie School. He researches the role of business in society, in particular for sustainability and democracy. Sébastien adopts an organizational sociology perspective on the interactions between business and civil society, and studies how these interactions shape activities, beliefs, memories and norms of corporate responsibility, sustainable development and the governance of global business activities. He frequently works with firms, NGOs and social enterprises in varied settings and countries, such as commodity supply chains in Sub-Saharan Africa, working conditions in the South East Asian textile industry, a sustainable bank in the UK and alternative food systems in Germany and beyond. Sébastien’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Academy of Management Review, Human Relations, the Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Studies. He previously held academic positions at City, University of London (UK), the University of Alberta (Canada) and the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). He is an Associate Editor of Business & Society and serves on several editorial boards of management and organization studies journals.
