Application and recruitment process

  • Apply early and in full
Unless stated otherwise, we review applications and begin screening on a rolling basis. We encourage you to apply early. Your application must include all documents requested in the job posting (.pdf works best); incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • Cover letter and curriculum vitae
We usually ask you to at least submit a cover letter and an up-to-date CV. Your cover letter should complement – not restate – your CV. We are especially interested in learning how your previous experiences have prepared you for the role you are applying for. Your CV should be chronological and clearly structured. Do not be afraid of breaks in employment but be honest about them and about your previous jobs.

  • Let someone check your application for mistakes
A CV and cover letter free of mistakes demonstrate professionalism and attention to detail. This includes addressing your application to the contact person(s) mentioned in the job opening.

  • Prepare for interviews
When invited to interview, we ask you to prepare well for this. You should expect not only specialist questions, but also behavioural ones. We value curiosity and appreciate it if you have thought to prepare questions for us, too.

  • Persons in charge
Given the wide range of positions we offer, responsibilities for recruitment processes are shared among our community.

Academic positions (Student Research Assistants, Research Associates, Postdoctoral Researchers): For these positions, the respective faculty members are the hiring managers. Expect to be contacted by them or their assistants.

Administrative positions: Student Assistant positions are run by the unit seeking support. All other administrative positions (Assistant, Associate, Manager, Director) are coordinated between the hiring manager(s) and the Hertie School’s Human Resources team.

  • Recruitment process
Selection includes at least one interview, either in-person or online.

For administrative staff positions (from Assistant level upwards), the recruitment process usually consists of a specialised test, reflecting some of the typical tasks for the role, and one or more interviews. In these interviews, you may expect to meet the hiring manager, team members, as well as representatives from Human Resources and our Works Council. For some (leadership) positions, interviews with the school’s senior management are the final step.
