All-female Hertie School team wins award for “Best Use of Outside Data” at DataFest Germany 2024

Five students from the Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) travel to Mannheim for a 48-hour hackathon.

At this year’s DataFest Germany, an annual data science festival for students, “The Counterfactuals” team from the Hertie School won the “Best Use of Outside Data” award. What is special: gor the first time, the Hertie School team consisted exclusively of female data scientists from all around the world.

The team included students Xiaohan Wu, Jennifer Estigene, Anzhelika Belozerova, Letícia Collado, and Gayatri Shejval. “It was a great experience to travel to Mannheim and put our knowledge into practice while competing with other data enthusiasts,” says Gayatri Shejwal, a Master of Data Science for Public Policy student and member of the winning team. “The award is the result of a lot of hard work and great collaboration between all the team members. We are now coming back to classes with renewed motivation, confidence and great connections made at the festival.”

The competition is organised by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. This year, it was hosted by the University of Mannheim. In a 48-hour hackathon, 67 students in 16 teams from universities around the country worked on public policy challenges using a given data set.
