This dual degree combines the Hertie School's Master of International affairs and IE University’s Master in International Relations in Spain. Over the two years, students explore the complex realm of global affairs, fully immersed in the vibrant cultural settings of Madrid and Berlin.
By combining two exceptional and highly pertinent degrees from two world-class institutions, you'll acquire a comprehensive and thorough insight into the field of international relations and affairs. This journey will also immerse you in the cultural and professional landscapes of two European cities, joining our expansive international networks and global alumni community.
Upon completing this dual degree, you will be prepared to craft solutions that significantly influence the direction of our societies in areas such as international security, human rights, and governance.
Year 1—IE University, Madrid:
During the first year, you will undertake the Master in International Relations at IE University. The fundamental courses are categorised into four distinct areas: Management and Analytical Skills; Geopolitics and Diplomacy; International Economics and Business; and Global Governance and International Cooperation. The final three areas also serve as options for your specialisation, which you will select towards the conclusion of your degree programme.
In this programme, experienced professors and practitioners provide expert knowledge, equipping students with vital skills and insights for thriving in diverse areas such as government, corporations, civil society, and multilateral organizations. The programme's first-class, flexible curriculum is designed to ready students for impactful careers on a global scale. As a key part of their practical training, students will undertake a final project in the programme: either a master’s thesis or a Capstone Consulting Project.

Internship:
Every student is required to complete a full-time internship between the first and second years of the programme.
Year 2—Hertie School, Berlin:
In the programme's second year, students move on to the Master of International Affairs at the Hertie School in Berlin. This programme provides a solid grounding in the essential skills and tools required for international policy mastery, with options to specialise in International Security, European Governance, or Human Rights & Global Governance.
No matter which specialty you select, the programme is designed to furnish you with a comprehensive set of theoretical, interdisciplinary, and practical skills necessary for navigating and resolving issues within the intricate global landscape. It focuses on enhancing your analytical and critical thinking capabilities, preparing you for the complexities of collaboration and conflict in international settings and organisations.
At the Hertie School, second-year students need to complete a 25-page (approximately 12,000 words) master's thesis on a topic of their choice. This provides an opportunity to delve deeper into a subject, potentially extending the exploration of themes similar to those in your Capstone/thesis at IE University.
Please be aware that students in this dual degree programme are ineligible for a gap year and consequently, cannot participate in the Hertie School's Professional Year.

The tuition fees for the dual degree program are set independently by each institution for their respective year of study. IE University determines the tuition for the first year in Madrid, and the Hertie School is responsible for setting the tuition for the second year in Berlin. IE University provides a payment plan and a range of financial aid options. Additionally, the Hertie School offers scholarships based on financial need, covering 25% of the tuition fees.
The dual-degree program at IE University and the Hertie School welcomes applications from around the world from individuals who show academic excellence and a commitment to international relations. Prospective students should initially apply to the Master in International Relations at IE University. Once accepted, they have the opportunity to apply for the dual-degree option.
