Mauro Gilli is Professor of Military Strategy and Technology at the Hertie School. Mauro's research focusses on military-technological competition, modern military operations, and strategic rivalry. His research has been published in International Security, Security Studies, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Strategic Studies, Texas National Security Review, and Competitive Strategy, among other notable outlets. He received the Best Academic Article Award from the America in the World Consortium for one of his articles.
Mauro has a BA in Political Science with a minor in Economics from the University of Turin (summa cum laude), an MA in International Relations and International Economics from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, and a PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University. Before joining the Hertie School, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Dartmouth College from 2015 to 2016, and from 2016 to 2025, he was a Senior Researcher in Military Technology and International Security at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zürich).
