Joseph Finnerty is a PhD researcher at the Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights. His doctoral research explores the recent development of Article 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights. He graduated with a degree in Law and History (LLB) and obtained the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (PgDip) from the University of Glasgow. He went on to complete a Master of Laws in International and European Law (LLM) at Ghent University, before qualifying as a solicitor in Scotland. He has taught at the European Humanities University (Vilnius) and Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. In addition to his doctoral research, he has particular research interests in the fields of access to justice and freedom of expression.
