Climate capacity in medium-sized German cities: (how) do smaller municipalities implement mitigation and adaptation policies?

A presentation by Peter Eckersley (Associate Professor in Public Policy and Management, Nottingham Business School). This event is part of the Sustainability Colloquium hosted by the Centre for Sustainability.

At this Sustainability Colloquium, Peter Eckersley will present his research on how smaller municipalities are addressing the twin challenges of climate change mitigation and adaptation. While research often highlights leading cities and ambitious climate plans, much less is known about the realities of smaller local governments. Drawing on an analysis of 194 German cities and in-depth interviews with local officials, this presentation explores how medium-sized municipalities are increasingly engaging with both mitigation and adaptation at the institutional level, while also grappling with challenges in implementation, reliance on external expertise, and the risk of highly ambitious planning.

Following the presentation, attendees will have the chance to discuss and ask questions. This session will be moderated by Christian Flachsland.
