Crisis Management for Energy Infrastructure
Responding to Attacks, Managing the Fallout, Securing Business Continuity
Energy companies are among the prime targets of sabotage by hostile international actors and their proxies. Cases like HellCat ransomware attacks on the French company Schneider Electric, cyber sabotage of the German industrial energy firm GEA and S16 hackers’ group attack on the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system managing oil pumps and storage tanks in Texas are only some of the recent examples. Being prepared to counter sabotage threats can save millions of euros.
Led by former Latvian Minister of Interior Marija Golubeva, the course draws on real-world experience in handling complex security crises and coordinating responses across government and stakeholders.
Being prepared involves having first-hand experience of the pressures and competing demands on the company team once an attack happens. The goal of this executive seminar and simulation is to offer insights into several dimensions of responding to sabotage – crisis management, stakeholder management, and public communication.
Topics
The course will start with an introductory session focused on the global threat landscape and a guided analysis of threats presented by sabotage of energy infrastructure. A key component of this course will be the immersive simulation. After selecting your role in a company crisis management team (involving risk management and business continuity roles, communication roles, and general management roles) you will engage in the simulation of a complex crisis involving sabotage, cyberattacks and disinformation. In managing this case, you will make collective and individual decisions and reach out to public and private stakeholders. The course will conclude with a debriefing and discussion session with the lecturers.
