Joseph Finnerty successfully defends his PhD dissertation

Joseph Finnerty successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights.

Joseph Finnerty’s dissertation, titled “Too little, too late? The effectiveness of Article 18 ECHR in safeguarding pluralism” in a democratic society,” examines the role of Article 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights in addressing state-driven restrictions on democratic pluralism. His research was supervised by Professor Başak Çalı [Hertie School and University of Oxford] Professor Philip Leach [Middlesex University   London] and Professor Dr Eva Brems [Ghent University].

The oral examination took place on Monday, 24 March with Dr Esra Demir-Gürsel [Hertie School] joining the PhD Committee to deliver the final grade. 

Following the successful completion of his PhD, Finnerty will take up the position of Postdoctoral Researcher at the Academy for European Human Rights Protection at the University of Cologne, led by Prof Angelika Nussberger. His teaching and research will focus on International Law and International Human Rights Law.
