About the Ranking
The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), is considered as one of the most influential and widely used global university rankings. It has published the world university ranking since 2009 and introduced the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects in 2017. The 2024 comparison contains rankings of universities in 55 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. Nearly 2,000 universities are listed in the rankings.
The Shanghai Ranking evaluates universities worldwide based on several objective indicators, primarily focussing on research performance. These indicators include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in prestigious journals like Nature and Science, and overall research output. Its Global Subject Ranking of Academic Subjects combine a range of academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance in relevant subjects, including categories such as World-Class Faculty, World-Class Output, High-Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration.
