The yearlong programme “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Public Administration” prepares German government executives to use AI to improve public administration.

Congratulations to the first cohort of our “Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Public Administration” certificate! After a year of learning how to leverage AI to modernise public administration while minimising the risks it poses, 25 executives from all government levels received their certificates last Friday at the AI Campus in Heilbronn. The ceremony followed the conclusion of the programme’s sixth and final module “Regulation and Governance of AI” and also featured an expert panel discussion on how the public administration can make use of AI to improve public value.

Gerhard Hammerschmid, Professor of Public and Fiscal Management and Programme Director, says: “With 15 teaching days in seven months, the programme presented participants with an intensive and rigorous learning experience. We were impressed by the interest, commitment, competence and perseverance that the participants showed throughout the programme, and we look forward to seeing how they bring public administration towards a digital future.”

AI certificate launched to help public officials upskill for digital transition

The “AI and Data Science for Public Administration” executive certificate was launched last year as part of the Hertie School’s EMPA (Executive Master of Public Administration) programme to provide decision-makers in the public administration with the necessary knowledge to help their organisations successfully navigate the digital transition towards using AI. The programme is run by the Centre for Digital Governance and the Data Science Lab at the Hertie School in cooperation with GovTech Campus Deutschland, TUM Think Tank, and Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford, with support from the Dieter Schwarz Foundation. As the programme is geared toward German public officials, the programme language is German.
