Christian Flachsland participates in Scoping Meeting for next Assessment Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Hertie School professor joins leading global experts at Kuala Lumpur meeting to contribute to preparations for the 7th Assessment Report of the IPCC.

Professor of Climate Policy Christian Flachsland, Director of the Centre for Sustainability, has been invited to participate in the upcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scoping Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 9 to 13 December. As a recognised expert in climate policy, Flachsland will contribute to scoping the contributions of Working Group III, which focuses on strategies for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

The IPCC is the United Nations body responsible for assessing the science of climate change, providing policymakers with regular evaluations of its impacts, risks, and solutions for adaptation and mitigation. The Scoping Meeting will lay the foundation for the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report, a critical resource for international climate policy. Flachsland and fellow experts will collaborate to draft the outline of the Working Group’s contributions, addressing areas such as policy instruments, governance frameworks and political economy. These efforts aim to offer governments, stakeholders and the public an authoritative synthesis of the available social science on developing effective mitigation strategies. Moreover, the report aims at developing a comprehensive foundation for climate policymakers worldwide, focusing on approaches that align with the Paris Agreement and support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
