The Jacques Delors Centre’s Deputy Director explains why and how the EU must prepare for enlargement.
On 8 November, the European Commission adopted its 2023 enlargement package and recommended negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. In this context, Thu Nguyen analysed in the Tagesthemen why not only the candidate countries but also the EU must prepare for enlargement.
"The EU must also be in a position to make decisions with 36 or 37 member states, so that it is not blocked if a single member state uses its veto," said Nguyen. Furthermore, the EU must be able to "protect its values even as it becomes larger and more heterogeneous".
