What causes differing levels of performance when it comes to public governance? A new understanding of governance can help us find an answer.
At the heart of a country's ability to meet public needs is governance. Why do some countries struggle to deliver healthcare, reduce inequality, provide clean environments or deliver public goods, despite having enough resources to do so? How does the state of democracy in a country influence its ability to supply basic provisions to its population?
The Berggruen Governance Index, initially developed at the Hertie School, sheds light on these questions. The centerpiece of a multi-year project run jointly by the Berggruen Institute and UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs, with involvement from a team at the Hertie School, the index examines the relationship between quality of democracy, quality of governance and quality of life in over 130 countries over a twenty-year period.
After welcoming remarks by Hertie School President Cornelia Woll, Senior Professor of Sociology, Helmut K. Anheier and Markus Lang from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs will present their findings. A panel discussion and Q&A session will follow.
