Thilo Sander holds a Master of Science in Theoretical Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in International Management and Engineering from the Hamburg University of Technology. He worked for the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on projects in the industrial goods and public sector. At the Hertie School, he deepened his knowledge in public policy in addition to his technical and managerial experience. His main focus is on quantitative policy analysis using data science tools such as machine learning. He used these techniques to analyse the impact of housing programmes on the average rent in cities like Hamburg. He completed his Hertie School internship in the policy management staff (Directorate General L) of the German Federal Ministry of Finance under the then Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz.
