Gilli will assume the role of Professor of Military Strategy and Technology at the Centre for International Security.
The Hertie School is pleased to welcome security expert Mauro Gilli to its faculty as Professor of Military Strategy and Technology. Professor Gilli will contribute his expertise on military-technological competition, modern military operations, and strategic rivalry to research at our Centre for International Security. His professorship is generously funded by the Ax:son Johnson Foundation.

Strengthening research and teaching at the Hertie School
Professor Gilli’s research focusses on military technology, operations and strategy; weapons acquisition and defence policy; weapons development and industrial espionage; innovation, creativity and organisational culture; as well as technological change and technology strategy. His work has generated high-profile policy attention, including by the NATO Secretary General, the European Defence Agency, the NATO Science and Technology Organization, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense of the U.S. Department of Defense, among others.
Alongside contributing to debates on security at the Hertie School, Professor Gilli will also help to educate the next generation of security experts: “I am especially looking forward to one of the aspects of academia I value most: teaching and engaging with motivated students, while contributing to the promotion of strategic studies in Europe and supporting a new generation of strategists.”
Before joining the Hertie School, Professor Gilli was a Senior Researcher in Military Technology and International Security at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zürich).
